My son is 16 and my daughter 20. They are crazy and nerdy and amazing. I have an awesome connection with both of them. Highlight of my day? Coming home from work in the afternoon and them fighting over who gets to hug mommy first. Sigh.

My daughters are 14 and 18. The attachment to their cellphone drives me nuts, but then it also has kept the line of communication open between us. As much as I would like them to sit down & talk to me face to face, sometimes the only way they feel comfortable enough to start a conversation with me is by texting me.

I’m nodding along re: technology and enjoying the times in the car and at meals and other activities when spontaneous conversation erupts. Doing the occasional chore/project together is another gem of a time for talking. By the time they are teens, we are no longer the leaders in the family and must hope to be [...]

@Kathy – We are SO on the same wavelength! I was thinking about just this topic – the forgotten art of conversation – as I drove in the car with my daughter. She’s only seven, but already is influenced by our 140-character way of life. I was wondering how you teach the art of conversation [...]

The teenage years are difficult to navigate. How do you help your teen deal with being picked on, and how do you make sure your child isn’t the bully?

As a mom of a 17 year old and 14 year old boys who often wonders what planet are her sons from…how I wish I new the answer to the elusive topic of having a “meaning” conversation with my 2 teenage boys! Part of the biggest issue I see is the role that technology plays [...]
