Where do you stand on the cell phone debate. Love ‘em? Hate ‘em? We’d love to know.

My kids did not get cell phones until they were 13 years old. I felt they didn’t need one until they were involved in extracurricular school events of Middle into High School, so they could keep me posted on their whereabouts and happenings, which by the way was a big rule of mine at the time, and now that they are away at college, we get the joy of hearing from them everyday just so they can tell us about their day.

My daughter is 11 and has a cell phone, but there are strict rules on its use. Luckily she is not all that into using the coputer or phone and does not do a lot of texting etc…

    Rules are simple-
    1. phone never goes to bed with her. It is placed in the basket on the dining table at night on silent
    2. All texts will be deleted by mom and dad – We monitor this online and know who is in her phonebook list
    3. No one is given your phone number unless we say it is ok
    4. If you don’t follow the rules, you lose the phone.

She is good about it, and has lost the privileges only once. Many times she does not even charge her phone so it is not an issue with the use.

She takes it when she has after school activities, field trips and is riding bikes with her friends. She is very responsible with it because we set these rules and she knows that if the rules are broken, then phone goes away. I don’t look for it to become an issue with her.
