    My grandchildren call me YaYa and I was talking with my 2 1/2 yr old granddaughter Brooklyn the other day about “grandma’s”. I started to explain that I am her grandma. Well of course she looked at me quite confused and said NO you my YaYa! She calls her other grandma Nana, my mother her great-grandmother Mimi but she does call her other great-grandmother grandma, so as you can see in her little mind she only has 1 grandma. We are still talking about it as I try to teach her about “grandma’s” and it occured to me that our grandchildren today call us by so many different names that they rarely hear about anyone’s grandma not like when we were growing up.

    I am mammw to my 10 yr old grandson Kam, I am mimi to our only granddaughter Cheyenne and to the 2 three year olds I am mimi by one and woman to the other.

    My daughter calls her grandmother “Jannie” (my mom’s name is Jan) and her grandfather “Papa.”
    In my family, my maternal grandmother is “Mamie” (not sure why, her given name is Helen … I only know she didn’t want a “grandmother-y” title), and my paternal grandmother went by “Halmuni” which i believe is Korean for grandmother … we often called her “Muni” for short.
    I love how there are SO many different names for “grandmother” across cultures, nationalities, and even families.
    Whatever the name, the role seems universal – unconditional love, fun, and a healthy dose of spoiling!

    My only grandaughter calls me Nana which thanks to me was her first word, lol! We call my husband Papa or Pop-pop but she doesn’t say either yet. She just turned 1 today! She is my heart!
