Mommy’s Got Skills
Posted on April 27, 2010 by FoBaM-Jamie
Mother’s Day is right around the corner (yay!), so today we were thinking about how much moms rock. We think our own moms rock, our mom friends rock, and we rock. Oh – and we think you rock, too!
Moms are complex creatures. On any given day, we wear dozens of hats (childcare provider, chef, chauffeur, therapist, doctor, advocate, teacher, playmate, disciplinarian, social coordinator, sports coach, and so on). As we switch up our roles from one minute to the next, we have to call on all kinds of super mommy skills to make things happen, keep the peace, and maintain our sanity. Moms truly do it all … with style, panache, and a reasonable amount of grace (more on some days than others).
In preparation for all the adoration that will take place when the kids pay homage to us moms, we want you to start thinking about just how marvelous you are.
You work hard and pull off miracles each and every day. It’s ok to give yourself a little pat on the back:

I’m beginning to embrace all these wonderful sites that help encourage me to hold on a little while longer.
The greatest gift “skill” a mom has is to love. Love even when that child is determined to be unloveable. Love when the child has just colored turquois knee socks on themselves (no, there were no washable markers at the time) and you are leaving NOW for a family get together. Love when the child had thrown a fit in the toy isle of Wal-Mart, and continued that fit all the way to the car. Love when the child has given up their favorite (or most expensive toy) to a child who has nothing. Love when the child is a straight A student, an average student, or a struggling student. Love when the child is a bad example or a wonderful leader. A mom has unending love in her heart for all children. That is what makes her more than a mother . . . . it makes her a Mom.
Love when you run out of patience and ideas and the only thing you can do is hug them a hug and tell them how much you love them. Love truly is the greatest skill/tool/weapon a Mom has.
Happy Mother’s Day
Being a mom is the most difficult and yet rewarding role I can play. I believe it is important to trust your children with the lessons you have taught them and allow them to learn from their mistakes. Most importantly though– NO MATTER WHAT be honest with them, love them unconditionally, and be there for them even if you don’t always agree. NEVER GIVE UP ON THEM– because they need you to believe in them so they can lern to believe in others! Every challenge they present to you needs to be a teachable moment!!
I wear all the hats that all Mother’s wear. Even as a Grandmother, I wear all the hats and many more. I am there to relieve stress on the parents by taking the kids for awhile. I am the nurse, the babysitter, the helper for homework, etc. I love it and I wouldn’t change anything
@Clarissah – So glad you feel encouraged.
@Chrissie – You said it! Unconditional is the word. Moms are always there … no matter what. Personally, I find it wonderful to have something in my life – my love for my daughter – about which there is no gray area. 150% all day every day … no matter what.
@Michelle – Love that you describe it as a skill/tool/weapon … so true!
@Susan C – Beautiful sentiment. Expressing your belief in someone – a child or an adult – is one of the greatest gifts you can give. We could all use someone telling us, “You can do it! I believe in you!”
@Brenda – Love hearing from our FoBaM grandmothers and appreciate you sharing your two generations of mothering wisdom! So glad to hear you’re still enjoying it!
