Cure your cold season blues with “The Sniffles for Bear” GIVEAWAY
Posted on September 27, 2011 by FoBaM-Jamie
We’re so happy to see our old friends Bear and Mouse back again, but we’re sorry to see that dear, old, curmudgeonly bear has come down with a nasty cold. Good thing that Mouse is still as bright-eyed, cheerful, and persistent as ever.
If you and your children haven’t yet met Bear and Mouse, you are in for a treat. Their friendship began in the charming A Visitor for Bear, and their adventures have continued through A Birthday for Bear and A Bedtime for Bear. In The Sniffles for Bear, Bear is sure that he is going to meet an untimely demise at the hands of the common cold. With a level of theatrics to rival even the most worthy drama queen (i.e, most grown men), Bear grudgingly submits to the ministrations of his small, gray friend.
Mouse is full of ideas on how to nurse his friend back to health. Much to Bear’s dismay (and rather obvious annoyance), Mouse attempts to cheer his friend up with a story, a song, a tune, nettle soup, and – at Bear’s melodramatic request – taking dictation for his will. Through all Mouse’s care, Bear continues to wallow in his misery, horrified at his friend’s seeming inability to acknowledge the gravity of the situation. At last, after stage-whispered farewells, Bear expires, but only for the night … snoring away.
When he awakens, Bear is feeling much better, but poor Mouse is looking worse for wear. Our bright-eyed friend is no longer so bright-eyed, having caught Bear’s sniffles. With the tables turned, it’s Bear’s turn to tuck his friend into bed.
As with the other Bear and Mouse books, author Bonny Becker and artist Kady MacDonald Denton have done a masterful job of bringing these two characters to life. Each of their stories makes a fabulous read-aloud, and The Sniffles for Bear is no exception. I must admit that my own inner dramatist comes out as I read Mouse’s chipper, cheerful lines or bellow out Bear’s indignant cries for empathy and decorum. These books are charming, funny, and so much fun to read. They are sure to be favorites.
Happily, our friends at Candlewick Press have offered to give away five copies of The Sniffles for Bear to Fans of Being a Mom readers. Whether you’re just starting to your Bear and Mouse collection or adding to it, this will make the perfect choice – bringing a healthy dose of warmth and humor to the cold and flu season.

Cute book!
We try to get, plenty of rest. Usually a sick kiddo end up sleeping with mommy. Thus giving mommy their cold.
I like to make a big ol’ pot of home made chicken soup..it always cures what ails you!!
When one of us is sick, the others in the house help out more. We also try to keep our voices down so we can let the sick one/s get rest.
I open all the windows turn on the fans an try to push all the bad germs out while spraying down everything with disinfectant. Wash everything an get my kids to drink immune booster drinks
cute book!!
Awwwww; this book looks cute for my little man and me to read
My daughter likes to be spoiled when she’s sick. It’s a big deal to her to get to lay on the couch and watch her shows and eat on the couch.
I have three boys. They are 8, 4 and 2. It seems like when one gets sick the others get it too. We try to wash our hands frequently, drink lots of fluids and give extra snuggle time including hugs and kisses.
Getting sick is no fun…..we try to prevent it as much as we can in our house. We stock up on lots of kleenex and hand sanitizer. We also put a roll of paper towel in the bathroom for drying hands instead of spreading germs with a towel. It seems to help a lot. We also wipe down our bathroom sink daily with a lysol wipe.
Keeping everyone healthy is a daily chore, but it is worth it.
we usually go to redbox, rent a few movies and stay in our pjs all day. Even though the kids are sick, its a welcome break to curl up and snuggle them all day. We make blanket beds on the floor in the livingroom, eat chicken soup and popsicles and spend time together. Big hugs always help
I have 2 yr old twin boys, so that means 99.9% of the time, when one gets it, they BOTH get it. SO, we stay in bed, have some soup, read books ( which they love at this age), and snuggle, and lots of TLC……Good Times
When someone gets sick in our house, they get to choose what bed they would like to be in while sick, i.e. the sickbed and it is usually Mommy’s and Daddy’s bed. Plus they get choose their favorite shows/dvds and get their favorite sick foods.
Great Giveaway!
We load up on ginger ale, and homeade chicken and noodles. Plenty of rest and snuggles, and kleenex with lotion. Don’t forget the lysol!
In our home, a cold is kicked with lots of snuggles and naps! My little one is only 2 1/2 and very active so you know when he’s not feeling too great, and that is his favorite thing to do when he doesn’t feel well. Daddy will do for a snuggle, but mama’s snuggles are the best.
Lots of rest and cuddle time, usually a day or two in bed reading tons of books together and watching movies.
Stay in our Jammies all day while we watch movies and read books. Rest and lots of fluids!
This is a relly cute book and we just nap snuggle and watch movies.
When someone in the family gets sick its usually a family “pitch in” kinda deal! Whether its Mom, Dad or our girl sick we all help out. We make sure the person sick gets lots of fluids & as much rest as they need to help them feel better & lots of love. And of course, meds for fever, if needed. A few days of cuddling up watching movies with box of kleenex & maybe a bucket close by (if needed) … Thankfully, it has worked for us!!!
We love the Bear books…. when were sick (as we are today) we spend lots of time snuggling and reading books. I am a germ phobe so I wash down most every surface at night and make sure my kiddos are always washing their hands!
Lots of cuddles with mom while reading, watching movies, and napping together!
Everyone knows TLC as Tender Loving Care but, in our house, when someone gets sick it’s kisses on the Toes, Lids (since we don’t want to kiss on the lips if we’re sick!) and Cheeks for a little twist to go along with the Tender Loving Care! Works better than any antibiotic I know of
Sounds like a cute book. When we have the sickies I make a huge pot of chicken soup & there’s lots of snuggling & cartoons.
When one of my babies are sick….I fill up a bathtub of nice warm water & Bubbles….Fresh Jammies & Alll new bedding…..Tuck them into bed and have some snuggle time. Reading a book or two….and rubbing there Head…(which cured me as a young child) =) Tilll there fast asleep in dream land! Mother of 3 kidos ages 10,3 & 2. Sleep is the Best Medicine!
When my kids get sick we let them snuggle up in the bed with us and watch their favorite movies. They get lots of rest and plenty of soup! They both love to read. This book you are giving away looks so cute. I know they would love it . Where can it be found to purchase for a gift. Thank you!
I must say we’ve never seen these books. I’ll have to see if we can find them at the library. It looks very cute though. Love the art.
When someone in our house gets sick we spent time cuddling up on the couch. Out comes the extra vitamin c, zinc, and disinfectant. As much as the rest of us don’t want to catch the bug, Mommy is prepared to be sick a few days following. Sick is not fun, but knowing the amount of care I can provide makes it all worth it!!!
We lay on the couch, watch movies and I get whatever they need…..Im the mom
We use a lot of vitamins and try to rest! We love bear books
We love to read books like these, ones the kids can relate to. When my babies are sick, we spend time on the couch watching TV, and laying around. Its a fun treat for the kids to just be lazy and watch TV
Whenever one gets sick that means the rest are surely to follow ,so a pot of chicken soup with some extra spices to kick it up so we can kick the cold along with Lysol and open windows to keep it from going in circles. And the best part about the family getting sick is all the time spent together cuddled up on bed or on couch.
We cuddle on the couch under blankets and watch a movie or read books. My son also likes to drink juice because one of his cartoon characters drank juice to feel better.
My babies are extra pampered when they’re sick. P.j.’s all day, lots of lovin’s, stories, and movies.
We make homemade elderberry juice to drink for our immune system. We also try to get plentt of rest, wash our hands, and open up the windows for fresh, clean air.
I have a 2 year old son and when he gets sick (actually has the croup right now) we love to snuggle up and read stories. I have never read this series before and think it would make a great addition to our home library.
When someone in our house is sick the couch belongs to them. There is a nice, fresh, clean sheet put on it with fresh, clean pillow cases. The remote is close by and their meals are served on the “special” tray.
We spend lots of time cuddling and watching movies together. Makes for a great family day!!! Of course after meds have been taken and the house disinfected!
I HATE when my kids get sick!! We have “feel better campouts” in the living room….
Everyone chips in more when someone is sick.
When one of my girls gets sick, we spend most of the time cuddling on the couch and I read loads of books to them or we watch a movie together.
Cuddling always makes us feel better!
We feel better with homed chicken soup and lots of cuddles and tlc from mom and dad!
When my girls are sick (age 5 and 9), they always want homemade lemon, honey and ginger tea. And of course lots of snuggles…
Lots of extra lovins and plenty of fluids! Movies and rest:)
We drink lots of juice and water, cuddle in a comfy blanket, and read a book or watch a favorite movie.
What a perfect book!!! Both my babies (4 and 10 months) are sick with the cold/flu….. We are resting and watching movies and reading stories!
We cuddle
Lots of cuddles & some chicken noodle soup!
Looks like such a cute book! Perfect when the kiddos are under the weather!
My daughter gets even more TLC and lots of tv time to rest to feel better. I try to give her lots of fluids too to try to flush out the germs!
I always make my kids favorite foods when they are sick. Good food, rest in comfy pjs and a great book always help in our house!
my baby is 9 months old and we haven’t had a cold yet; thankfully. i am excited to hear abou this book as i am sure both mommy and baby are going to need some comfort when the flu/cold hits our house. my “go-to” is always prayer so i am sure we well be praying often to get u thought this season.
When my husband or daughter are sick Dad camps out on the couch or recliner with a blanket and my daughter; the whole family takes it easy. Mom brings drinks and snacks and makes sure everyone is comfortable. When Mom is sick, not much changes…
I’m a blessed mom of four boys. They get plenty of rest & liquids. I buy them their favorite Gatorade drink. I make a huge pot of sopita (soup) or caldo de pollo (chicken soup) add some lemon to the soups. They love the soups especially the sopita. When mom gets sick, Dad locks me up in the room and tell the boys to leave mommy alone and to let him know what they need or want. =)
We drink lots of water, eat chicken soup, and snuggle up on the couch under a cozy blanket….and nyquil when Mom and Dad are sick!
Sometimes it is actually fun to be sick… in our home we snuggle in bed, with lots of books, tissues, and drink lots of orange juice and water. Chicken noodle soup is the dinner of the day, and soon the cold is gone, and it’s back to the routine!
Fluids, vit C, lots of rest and TLC
Just try to get lots of rest by reading, sleeping & lots of TLC!!! This would be a cute book for my daughter’s first grade class. Since there is always someone sick in a classroom (the teacher doesn’t have time to be sick, still has to work no matter what),
TLC and meds!!! <3
We snuggle on the couch and watch TV. Orange juice popcycles for sore throats
We have extra snuggle time in bed and either read books or watch a favorite tv show together.
Lots of snuggling and movie watching, as well as juice pops or popsicles to cure a sickie.
Disinfecting the house and linens (invest in Costco sized Lysol) and lots of hand washing! Rest and hydrate!
We like to cuddle up on the couch and watch sesame street, read books and eat lots of chicken noodle soup.
Disinfecting the house and linens (invest in Costco sized Lysol) and lots of hand washing!
I have a son who is almost two years old, and he is just now starting to want to snuggle up next to his mommy when he doesn’t feel well. This takes me back to the days in my childhood when my mom would close the blinds, snuggle up with a big blanket and bring me books to read when I wasn’t feeling well. We’d eat lipton noodle soup, read and watch the wizard of oz all day. Not only did it take my mind off of being sick, it sure did make me feel better. I will always recall these memories when trying to nurse my poor sickie back to health.
A nice bath, lots of cuddles, and extra tv time.
When one of us are under the weather, homemade chicken soup is perfect. Freshly made orange juice is great. All day in bed or on the sofa watching t.v, reading a book or tell stories about mom and dad´s childhood. However, for me when I seem to not be able to keep anything down, what helps me is to drink 7up and then the next day I´m fine. My little boy however does not like 7up because of the bubbles. So it´s either water or orange juice.
we cuddle and try to have lots of fluid and rest!
We have five children, so when one gets sick, they all get sick. We just let them rest and chicken noodle soup!
When my family are not feeling well… lots of TLC, OJ, chicken soup, cuddling, & rest!!!
too cute
For my kids, a little cuddling goes s long way…and of course some Airborne for Mommy!
lots of our favorite drink and t.v. time with as many pillows as we want.
I try not to let my kids watch too much tv, but when they’re sick I try to rent a movie they haven’t seen, or if I can’t rent one I let them pick out a DVD to watch. They also sometimes get soda as a special treat to help. Tons of cuddling, hugs, and kisses are involved, which is why I am now sick with my older daughter’s cold.
With 8 kids still at home, when one is sick we quartine them mostly to mommys bed so they can watch tv and give mommy their sickness… lots of hugs, fluids and rest.
We make chicken noodle soup and buy the nice kleenex. Then huddle up and watch movies for a while. Then if it is warm out we will go sit outside and warm up in the sun!
What a great book to read to the little ones when they are feeling sick. I have two boys. And when they have the flu they just want to cuddle.
It seems like when one of us gets sick we all do! Our 4yr old Daughter Emma becomes the princess stuck in the “sick tower” waiting for the prince of wellness to come save her lol. Funny this give away is on here today because my Husband & I have had a cold for a couple days & this morning our Daughter woke up with the runny/stuffy nose! When we or she is sick we call it lazy days & do small activities inside (mainly on the couch with blankets) we read lots of books watch movies & try to rest while waiting for the prince of wellness to come! I’m big on disinfictant, hand washing, washing bed clothes, lots of juice & vitamin C!
love to snuggle with my little one when he is sick, this would be such a cute book to read when he is soooo pitiful ;(
I love on my little ones when they are sick…Give them plenty of fluids…watch movies and read to them and just spend that one on one time with them more…They know when they are sick mommy’s bed is for them…Also I wash there sheets and spary with disinfectant…Plus I just shower them with extra love…Since we cannot really go to Church I try to make it like if they were there but at home instead…
I have two babies one is 6 and the other is 5 so if one gets sick so does my other. We get lots of rest and plenty of water. We color, watch movies, play games and read. I keep there room nice and cool and we just rest.
Chicken noodle soup and popsicles!
When my little ones are sick, there is a lot of cuddling and back rubs going on. Fluids, tissues, and a soft blankie. We do loads of hand washing to prevent “sharing” and spray everything with disinfectant. Afterward, new toothbrushes for the sick ones to get rid of those germs!
My two year old currently has the “sniffles”
I typically set up his humidifier (always when he’s sleeping and sometimes throughout the day depending on which room we are in.) I also make sure he gets plenty of fluids!
My little one loves to “read”! He would be so happy with a new book to read.
I snuggle with my 4 yr old little boy, & just watch tv, & i make chicken soup.
My 5yo was sick a LOT last year. When it happens, he gets to lay in mommy and daddy’s bed, watch tv/movies, I make ramen noodles for him, and I don’t dilute his juice so he gets all the vit C!
If only one kiddo is sick I do my best to separate them and keep the germs in one place. Lots of movies, books, coloring books and mama love provided to the poor sick one.
We love, love, love the Bear series!!!!
We usually spend lots of time snuggling. I get out the vicks, stock up on OJ, and we keep everything as clean as possible- when there’s 4 people in the house it always seems to spread easily. When mom gets sick though, the whole house is a disaster, but my honey does the best he can to make everyone happy
I have an eight year old daughter who rarely gets sick. When she gets ill she likes to hear some if my childhood stories and stories that my grandmother (99 years old now), use to sit and tell me and my other cousins when we got ill as kids. Her childhood stories would make you forget about feeling bad they were so interesting that you did not want the story to end. She would comfort you so that you would fall right off to sleep. My daughter likes to lie on your chest and listen to your beat while you tell her a story. Not sure why?
Lots of love, rest and being waited on! My kids get ginger ale or 7up to make sure they don’t get dehydrated. That’s what my mom always gave me when I was little when I was sick. My husband always gets them some sort of special activity book to do while they are in bed so they have a little something to do to make the time go by faster. Then I go around spraying everything with Lysol so my daycare kids don’t get it.
