BabyFans – A great success story and a coupon, too!

When Todd Wilson first came up with the idea for BabyFans back in 2000, he had no idea of the heart-wrenching journey that lay in store for him and his wife, Stacey. Today – eleven years after that initial spark of an idea and six years after the company’s official launch – their amazing story has a very happy ending, but the future didn’t always look so bright for this intrepid and courageous couple.

The idea for BabyFans was conceived in 2000 when friends Todd Wilson and Josh Fraser learned that they were going to be first-time uncles. Since both guys are huge sports fans, they immediately went in search of baby-sized team apparel so they could deck little Ellie and Nate out in the logos of their uncles’ favorite sports teams. To their surprise, the uncles-to-be came up empty handed.  As someone working in the sports licensing business, Todd knew the idea for BabyFans was a good one, but with life being so busy, he didn’t end up pursuing it right away …

… until early 2003 when Todd was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease. With his family and friends rallied around him, Todd prepared to fight for his life. During that difficult time, Todd turned to the BabyFans project as a way to keep himself busy. With the help of his friend Josh, they started putting the business together, piece-by-piece. After six months of chemotherapy treatment, Todd had beaten the disease and won a new outlook on life.

Today, BabyFans is six years old and growing strong. Turns out Todd and Josh aren’t the only ones who think pint-sized college, MLB, and NFL clothing and accessories are must-have items for the best-dressed baby. In fact, BabyFans has attracted the attention of some pretty high profile sports and Hollywood stars including Keith Brookings (formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, now playing all-pro with Dallas), A.J. Hawk (who recently played in the Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers), Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex in the City fame, and Jimmy Kimmel of late night television … just to name a few.

But those brushes with fame pale in comparison to Stacey and Todd’s latest joy – the long-awaited birth of their twin girls, Allison and Isabelle (Allie and Izzie). Stacey and Todd’s journey to parenthood has perhaps been the longest and most arduous part of their trials. While fighting cancer and building their business, this couple was also in the midst of a five-year infertility battle that included three complete IVF cycles and two heartbreaking losses.  For years, their happiness with the success of BabyFans was tempered by working among the baby clothes they wanted to give their own, unborn children and having to deflect well-intentioned questions about when they – the king and queen of baby sports fans – would have kids themselves.

It has been a long and winding road with many challenges, but now this family is whole and the sky is the limit. BabyFans continues to grow by leaps and bounds and Allie and Izzie are finally decked out in their parents’ sassy, sporty gear – University of Maryland for Todd, Pepperdine for Stacey, and the Red Sox, 49ers, and NY Giants for both. There’s no question that the Wilson family is a winning team, through and through.
