Mommy Prayers – we all need them
Posted on April 26, 2011 by FoBaM-Jamie
There are few life experiences that test us the way motherhood does. Though it is the source of much joy, discovery, and personal growth, it also has a way of knocking us off our feet when we least expect it. It’s during those moments of complete exhaustion, confusion, and desperation that we quietly murmur our mommy prayers – calling upon something bigger than ourselves to pull us through to the next day, the next minute. Tracy Mayor has captured a hysterically comforting collection of such prayers in her aptly titled book, Mommy Prayers: For the missing binkie, the late preschool pickup, the birthday party from hell…and other everyday absurdities. We are so pleased to have her here with us on the blog and delighted that she’s offered to give away three signed copies of this book. Even if you don’t win the giveaway, we highly recommend snagging a copy – it’s just the thing to get you through the darker moments of motherhood with a smile and even an outright guffaw. It makes a perfect Mother’s Day gift, too. We’re just saying.
When I was a little girl, I used to pray. A lot. I was a secret worrier, and at night I’d lie in my bed and stare at the ceiling and think of all of the bad things that could happen to me or my three brothers or my parents or our cat or my friends or poor orphans in Ireland or the fate of the Earth.
Our church wasn’t that big on praying — their message was, “Say thank you and move along; don’t bother God with your petty concerns.” So I’d pray very quickly, but very intensely.
I somehow survived junior high and high school — never a picnic for any girl — and went off to college, all grownup and put together and “over” stuff like praying. Oh, I still thought about God, and I still worried, but none of it had the same sense of helplessness and urgency it’d had when I was young. You can do things when you’re an adult rather than just worrying about them. I liked that, and I really do believe that “God helps those who help themselves…and others.”
Then I became a mom — and boom, suddenly I was right back where I’d been as a little girl, feeling scared and helpless and praying by the day — the hour — the minute. From the instant when they pulled my son from me, as purple as a grape from wearing his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck for eight hours of labor, the prayer went something like “Please God, keep my baby alive, please please pleasepleaseplease.”
Eventually, like all moms, I settled down a bit and gained some confidence in my abilities as a parent, and started praying for other stuff, most of which made it into my book Mommy Prayers.
Some of the prayers are poignant — like Prayer for My Grandmother or Prayer for My Baby’s First Step — but lots are funny, because if I’ve learned anything it’s that moms make it through those early years best if they have a great sense of humor — or a well-developed sense of the absurd.
So alongside those sweet prayers, you’ll also find Prayer for My Five-Minute Shower, Prayer on the Fifth Day of Rain, Prayer before the Home Pregnancy Kit, Prayer for My Wild Child, Prayer for Multitasking at the Playground and Prayer for a Girl’s Night Out (that one is essential!).
What’s the craziest thing you’ve prayed for as a frazzled mom? Tell us below, and you be entered into a drawing to win one of three signed copies of Mommy Prayers, perfect for gifting this Mother’s Day or just keeping all to yourself. What can you say to an offer like that besides “Amen!”
Editor Update: Comments must be entered below by midnight Wednesday, April 27th to be eligible for the giveaway drawing. Thanks!

I would love to win a copy of this book!!
Probably that the paint that my 3 1/2 year old son got all over him, his toy, and my old worn out couch would come out of my brand new carpet!
I think the craziest thing I have prayed is for the kids to forget how to talk for just an hour. Silence was greatly needed and I was going just a little nuts.
This book sounds great to lift your spirits if you’ve had a hard day with your child/children!! I would love a copy of this book!!
Being a single mom I constantly worry about how I am raising my son. I try to be two people to make up for the things that other kids have by having two parents. I tend to get frazzled easily and find myself praying to patience and for the ability to raise a well mannered/well rounded child. It’s not easy trying to raise a toddler by yourself but I’m very lucky to have very supportive friends & family to help me through the hard times but more importantly they’re there for the good times as well.
I agree i am a single mom to and it hard to be to ppl sometimes. but you know when you look at your child that its worth every mintute of it. i love being a mom she is my angel that keeps me going everyday. i couldnt ask god for anything else
This sounds amazing ! I would love a copy of this book please
I can totally relate. When I was little, and still even now, I can not help but to go through everything that happened throughout the day and worry about everything. My husband has tried to get me to stop worrying so much..and I think I have succeeded somewhat. I worry all the time of what could happen to my kids if I am not looking and pray that everyone will be ok and they will grow up to have a happy blessed life. Prayer has become a big part of my life lately. I would love a copy of this book!!
I pray that my son not repeat anything he has heard when he’s around any of his grandparents. I would love to get a signed copy
This book sounds fantastic! Laughter is the best medicine for sure. Would love a copy of this book…=)
I would love a copy ! As a mother of a son, I constantly worry, laugh and cry. He is my life but I always wonder and worry if he will be a good friend, brother and someday husband. I lead him with respect for himself and other , I just hope its enough. I would love a copy of your book. It sounds amazing and helpful
Being pregnant with our third…I could use this!
I have prayed for my kids who constantly forget to brush their teeth to be bothered by the feeling of un-brushed teeth to the point of not being able to do anything else until they got cleaned up.
i dont know if i have said very many crazy prayers, besides for them to listen to me and clean their room!!!
Trying to be home with my 2 kids and at the hospital with my youngest, she’s been in here for 17 days.I’m very frazzled by that.
This sounds like something I need right now! :0)
mostly, I pray “God don’t let me mess up my kids!” and “WHY are you doing this?” and “Oh God if this kid repeats the same behavior ONE MORE TIME, I swear I am going to LOOSE IT!” and ” I just don’t want them to make this mistake- PLEASE let them listen to me this time instead of having to find out for themselves by trying it!” I have 2 teens and a 9 year old…
I would love some laughter with a newborn and a 3 yr old it gets interesting.
this book sound awesome. I’d love to get a copy. Probably the craziest think I ever prayed for was for the housecleaning fairy to come and magically clean the kids playroom! No matter how often I clean that room it always seems to be a mess.
I would love to win this book, I definately need Mommy prayers! With a 5 yr old daughter, 7 year old daughter with CP, 9 year old son and 12 year old son…I’m always in God’s ear! Most recently I’ve been praying for forgiveness, I said something awful to my 5 year old when she was being mean, something like “you better be good or the Easter bunny won’t come.” Forgetting this awful thing I had said I decided that, since Grandma was bringing so many treats over on Easter and we really didn’t need to waste the money nor did anyone need all the extra candy, I was not going to do baskets this year. Easter morning, before dawn as they do, my 5 year old comes into my room and says, “Mommy, did the Easter bunny not come because I’m a BAD girl?” You see she’d already been looking for the basket that wasn’t there, so instant tears flowed from my eyes as I immediately remembered what I had said!! My heart is still broken over it, although it was an amazing opportunity for me to actually sit and tell her what a wonderful, beautiful, loved little girl she really is. While I don’t think this is by far the craziest thing I’ve prayed for, I still wanted to share it and would really love to win this book
I pray that I make it out of the grocery store without any milk let down accidents causing me to leave with 2 giant wet spots on my shirt.Yesterday I made it to frozen foods, lol.
I’d love to win a book! I remember praying for “just one more child”….and nothing…then I prayed for more children, and had twins! Yes, be careful what you pray for, b/c God really listens!! Prayer is so important….cannot make it through motherhood w/out it.
I’ve prayed for RAIN at an outdoor playdate …..My toddler was behaving so bad that I wanted the playdate to end…LOL
I remember praying, “Please let the black nail polish come off the wall of our military quarters!!” When I asked my son why he painted the wall, he replied “She (his sister) shouldn’t have left it where I could reach it”. As a mother of 5 and a military spouse, I most often pray for patience, but sometimes, black nail polish coming off a wall is the miracle I need!
that the teenage boy that walked into the supposedly locked bathroom while I was pumping will not have that image burned into his retinas and suffer horrible flashbacks, and that he would never recognize me by my face since his eyes were elsewhere!
I’ve prayed for time to stand still: at night to let me get a few more hours of sleep; during the day so I could get more cleaning done; and in general so that my babies will stay little!! Seems like there are never enough hours in the day and before you know it they are grown up!!
I NEED this book! LOL sometimes Im at a loss of exactly WHAT to pray for! Its usually SANITY or EXCEPTANCE!!
We all need prayers being a mother, period!lol but we can laugh it off and keep it going from day to day, that’s what strong mothers do.
i’ve prayed that the way i am doing things as i single mom of 3 girls will help them be strong and ambitious women! i would love a copy of this book!! sounds wonderful!!
After surviving a 7 year abusive relationship, my mother almost dying, and becoming a single parent ,to a now 2 1/2year old, (all in the last year)… I appreciate life so much more & try to laugh as often as possible!
For me, the house gets to crazy, it becomes a prayer to eat! Then, I ask myself, did I have time to brush my teeth? Lol! I can totally relate to this book so far!
I am an older mother of a very active 5 yr old. I have secretly prayed, on more than one occasion, that he get up a little stuffy or with a scratchy throat. Not that I want him to be sick, but he’s so calm and quiet when he doesn’t feel good. My daily prayer is that the school bus is on time so that he can go and play with the neighbor LOL! Although he can’t tell time, exactly, yet, he knows when it’s 3:15.
I would love to win this book, so that when my kids are napping or I get some “me” time in the tub at night I can relax and stick my nose in this book.
I would love to win a copy of the this book
praying to find my daughters favorite toy (her little piggy finger puppet) that I knit for her from her Old MacDonald set. It creates frantic moments for a mom when you are running around the house praying and searching under every possible pillow and cover for your 3 year olds lovie!
This sounds like such a wonderful book! I can think of so many things that could go in there!
I pray that my toddler daughter will soon get used to my newborn sons crying and stop screaming at me to give him a bottle to make him stop! LOL. I try to have a sense of humor about it but with him crying and her screaming, especially in the car, it’s kind of difficult…i would love a copy of your book:)
I love books like this i would love to add this to my collection
I think the craziest thing that I have prayed for is them to all stay in there bed all night long ! They are 4,5 and 6. At least one of them find their way to our bed. When they were younger I prayed that they would all nap at the same time so I could do the same
Love this! I would adore a copy!
Would love a copy of this….I think I say a daily prayer that my kids will stay in bed and fall asleep quickly every night!
I hope I am not alone in this but.. Some days are harder than others and every now and then I find myself just praying that the kids will just let me go to the bathroom (please don’t come in to “tattle-tale” or to say you want to sit on my lap) or just take a shower.(I need a moment to myself, and to degrease my hair!) Sometimes I need my privacy!
I would love a copy. My little one is only 18 months old and have bought the store out of binkies after frantically looking and looking for one binkie!! And then realize after a few months the “once was the baby”… dog is now stealing them and burying them in the backyard. I do say a daily prayer about my family and extended family. And I do find humor in my crazy moments, but usually days later, so maybe a copy of this book would help me enjoy the crazy moments sooner…lol This is a great idea for Mommy friends….cannot wait to share the site!
We’ve thanked God for the poop book. (I so could use this book!)
lots of funny books for parents lately. another funny one is “go the fk to sleep” written just for sleep deprived parents.can’t wait to add mommy prayers to my reading list
This is a great site – one that was a long time coming! thanks for all the laughs, I am sure who ever wins the books, will enjoy them!
thanks for the site and the smiles!
I’ve prayed for the babyfood peas to come off the ceiling. when it didnt, then I prayed that we still had paint in the shed to just paint over it. Thankfully, we did have the paint. That was quite a day. I’d just love to obtain a copy of this book!
Would love to read the book!
I pray that he sleeps a little later most days and that he eats for me today without argument but mainly I pray most for Patience. Im severly lacking in that department. I work on that everyday knowing that he is only young once and I want to enjoy everyday
I prayed that my newborn wouldn’t cry everytime his dad held him, cause I needed the break and I prayed that my husband wouldn’t cry everytime he held my newborn, cause I needed the break from him!
I’d like a copy of this book. It sounds interesting.
Today I prayed for finding my 20 months old boy’s most important lovey blanket which he had hided somewhere in the house (luckily we have back-ups).
I pray for no more belly flops into the fish pond at Monicello.
I would love to win a copy of this book. After reading it several times over, the other moms int he neighborhood would enjoy reading this As I know i will Pick me
Lately I have been praying everyday, “Oh Lord, please let today be the day that my son tells me he needs to go to the potty BEFORE he goes in his diaper!!!” LOL
I am a mother of 4 children of my own and of childcare out of my home and going to school online full time. So yes, I definitely need a copy of this book ! :0)
Would love a sign copy that give to my teens to read and understand.
